The Surf, The Gables, & The Gothic

The Surf at Block Island Beach House offers the only beachfront hotel rooms—some with private balconies—on the island. An easygoing open lounge welcomes guests and neighbors to grab a drink, linger over a snack or meal, or browse beach essentials, vintage-inspired goods, and locally-made gifts.

The Gables buildings across the street from The Surf have their own unique history. Formerly The Gables Inn, the property's spectacular location, great bones, and long history of welcoming families and travelers to the Block made it a great fit to join our fray. To appeal to guests looking for something a little different from The Surf, The Gables is perfect for those looking for a little more space, tranquility, and proximity to one of the only pools on the island.

Our newest house, The Gothic is located only 200 yards down Dodge Street from the Surf and has a more contemporary design featuring unique patterns and textures. The Gothic is an especially great fit for single travelers and couples looking for a serene, romantic, or more private stay, such as babymoons, anniversaries, and birthday getaways.

Helpful Tips...

  • Are you pet friendly?
Pets are welcome in the King Suite Porch and Vintage ADA Studio with Porch, at The Surf, and in our two Poolside King Suites and Lark Suite at Gables for the additional rate of $50 per dog, per night (no more than 2 dogs permitted). Please be aware that dogs are the only pets allowed, they must never be left in a guest room alone, and are welcome only on our porches and exterior common areas of the hotel, and only while on a leash. While we love our pets, not all of our guests feel the same way. For this reason, dogs are never allowed in interior public spaces. As a condition of reserving a room at our hotel, you agree to pay a $250.00 fee per night if any pets are found in rooms not designated as dog-friendly, or if your animal causes stains or damage to a pet-friendly guest room.
  • What is the best way to get to the island?

  • What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in is anytime after 4:00 PM. If you arrive early, we’re happy to suggest things to do in the area until check-in time. Check-out time is 11:00 AM.
  • Where are you located?
Our property is located at 32 Dodge Street in beautiful New Shoreham (Block Island), Rhode Island, just steps away from the lively downtown. Coming from the Old Harbor Ferry? An easy 5-minute walk to the hotel, starting at the end of the landing, walk through the parking lot and take a right onto Water Street. Take Water Street for about 0.1 miles and continue right onto Dodge Street–our hotel will be right there on your right! Coming from the New Harbor Ferry? Located just over a mile from our hotel, this ferry isn’t quite within walking distance so you’ll probably want to bring a car. (See “Should I bring a car?” below.)
